Water that had been sitting for a long time can be really hard on the nose. You don’t want a newly purchased fountain for your office, home, or garden that smells bad. It will totally destroy the soothing experience that owning a fountain promises. If your fountain develops an appalling scent this could be caused by algae, excess of decomposing matter, and anaerobic bacteria. To prevent this from happening to your fountain, follow these simple steps. Keep your pump working more often. Algae and anaerobic bacteria multiply faster when there is not ample oxygen in the water. Keep the oxygen levels high by turning on your pump more often. It creates a healthy environment by recirculating the air, oxygenating it. If the pump is off, oxygen diminishes, giving anaerobic bacteria the chance to release foul-smelling gases like methane, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide. Keeping your pump turned on longer can make it work more efficiently and it will have a longer lifespan. Keep the fountain free from organic matter: Fallen leaves, twigs, grass, clippings, and other plant matter can mess up your fountain and make it smell disgusting as it releases methane when it decomposes. Change the fountain water if you let it still for a couple of days. But if your pump is constantly on, you don’t have to replace your water as often, since the water added in the basin evaporates and keeps the water fresh. Use water fountain treatments to avoid algae growth. They are simple to use and are affordable. Just put a few drops in your fountain every week and it will be enough. Clean the fountain according to the instructions of the manufacturers whenever there is stubborn algae growth. Check the bottoms of any river rocks existing in your fountain basin. There may be buildup of organic matter underneath the rocks which can also cause bad odor. River rocks can be cleaned by soaking them in a bowl of water with either vinegar or bleach. What is important is to keep your fountains clean and oxygenated to avoid foul stench. For more fountain care tips visit our website every Wednesday or check our fountain care archives.
